Biography
Madeline Benz, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Butler Hospital’s Psychosocial Research Program. She completed her undergraduate education at Brown University, followed by a Master’s degree at the Brown University School of Public Health prior to completing her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Clark University. She came back to Brown for her psychology residency and postdoctoral fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior under the research mentorship of Brandon Gaudiano, PhD. Her research seeks to improve clinical outcomes for individuals with substance use and psychiatric comorbidity through the integration of clinical psychology and public health. This program of research includes rigorous empirical investigation of risk factors and barriers to care for vulnerable populations and groups with diminished autonomy, focusing on intervention development for high-risk patients. Her current research as a fellow on the Suicide T32 focuses on improving the identification and prevention of overdose-related risk behaviors for dual diagnosis populations. Specifically, she investigates the overlap of substance use and suicidal thoughts and behaviors to inform intervention development to mitigate adverse outcomes associated with this common co-occurrence.
