Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program

The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program was formally established in 1975.

Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program

Lauren Weinstock, PhD, Director

[Note: This internship is designed for clinical or counseling psychology graduate students who have completed all other requirements for the doctorate degree.]

History

The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program, within The Brown Clinical Psychology Training Consortium, was formally established in 1975.

Administration

The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program is coordinated by The Brown Clinical Psychology Training Consortium. The Consortium is centrally controlled through a Training Committee within the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior (DPHB) of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The Training Committee is the coordinating body of the program's policies and goals.

Diversity

The Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior is committed to promoting cultural competence in training and clinical services, providing ongoing educational opportunities for trainees and faculty, and promoting awareness of issues of diversity within all training sites. Please visit our diversity site for more information.

Training

The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program provides training at the predoctoral level for students interested in careers relevant to clinical science, research, and practice. The overall training philosophy of the program reflects a commitment to the development of psychologists who will apply scientific knowledge to human behavior in clinical practice and who will advance clinical science research.

The primary aim of the Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program is to provide an integrated year of predoctoral training which emphasizes both breadth and depth of clinical exposure. The overall aims are:

  • to ensure adequate levels of proficiency in the core aspects of assessment, therapy, consultation and clinical research within clinical psychology;
  • to provide a beginning concentration in a particular area of clinical psychology; and
  • to advance the overall professional development of clinical psychologists in training.

All clinical psychology residents are admitted to the training program within a track, or area of emphasis, which represents their career focus or interests. The Clinical Psychology Internship offers intensive training in four specific areas (tracks) of clinical psychology:

  1. Adult
  2. Child
  3. Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine
  4. Neuropsychology

Many predoctoral clinical psychology residents stay at Brown to complete their postdoctoral fellowship training!

Maintenance of Records

The manager of the Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program is responsible for maintaining records of all current clinical psychology residents and alumni. Performance evaluations for all of clinical psychology residents are stored through MyEvaluations, our secure, online electronic evaluation system. Upon completion of the internship, all records are archived to the Brown University secure server.

All clinical psychology currently in training have an active file stored on the Brown University secure server. This record includes: 1) the internship application, 2) their Individualized Training Activities, 3) additional information of note (e.g., request for verification of clinical psychology resident status for loan deferment, reference letters provided by the Director of Training for any purpose during the internship year). MyEvaluations records of all evaluations for the internship are maintained electronically and separately through a password-protected server and are stored in the clinical psychology residents’ files as well.

All Training Program files and directories are saved on the Brown University secure server, which is backed up every 4 hours. Brown University’s secure server (Files.Brown.EDU\DFS) environment utilizes data snapshot (Volume Snapshot Service or VSS) and data replication (EMC Isilon/SyncIQ) for data protection.  Formal complaints against the clinical psychology internship are kept on file, electronically, within the Training Office of the Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program indefinitely.

This internship is accredited by the American Psychological Association. The next site visit of the Commission on Accreditation will be in 2029. For questions about the program's accreditation status, contact:
