Christopher D. Hughes, PhD
Biography
The program of research of Christopher D. Hughes, PhD, focuses on improving the prediction and prevention of suicidal thoughts and behaviors through two complementary lines of work: identifying novel, proximal risk factors for suicide and developing real-time, mobile-health interventions targeting those risk factors. Chris graduated from James Madison University in 2012 with a B.S. in psychology. He was mentored by Drs. Kate Gunthert and Nate Herr at American University, where he received an M.A. in psychology in 2014 before matriculating Rutgers University’s Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program under the incomparable mentorship of Dr. Shireen Rizvi. Following graduation in 2020, he came to the Alpert Medical School of Brown University to complete his clinical psychology pre-doctoral internship where he stayed on to complete his postdoctoral fellowship as part of the Suicide Research T32 under the co-mentorship of Drs. Michael Armey and Heather Schatten. Upon completion of his fellowship, Chris joined Butler Hospital as a Research Psychologist with an appointment at Brown as an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. His research focuses on improving the prediction and prevention of suicide, which he will pursue as MPI of an R01 with Drs. Armey and Schatten.
